Healthy Eating
We humans are a curious lot. We love instant gratification. Sometimes we value short term pleasures over long-term gains. We’ll rationalize the unhealthy eating, the lack of exercise and other unhealthy habits saying we’ll worry about our health “tomorrow.”
For many that tomorrow never comes, as they stay on an unhealthy path until it eventually catches up with them. Many have fits and starts where they’re on the healthy path for a while, then veer off, then back on again some months or perhaps years down the road.
Maybe some of this sounds familiar. Indeed, you’re probably reading this because you’re one of the many who wants to get healthy – perhaps “again,” or perhaps for the first time. And for that I congratulate you!
Now before we begin talking about how to get back into good health, let me say this: your path to health might not always be perfect. If you’re trying to lose weight, you’ll overeat sometimes. If you’re working on getting in more exercise, sometimes you’ll skip your workouts. Maybe from time to time you’ll have one too many drinks, sit in the sun too long, eat something you know you shouldn’t have, or any number of unhealthy habits.
However, just remember this: getting healthy is not an “all or nothing” event. If you make a mistake and do something you shouldn’t (like smoke a cigarette), don’t shrug your shoulders and give yourself permission to smoke the whole pack. That’s like calling off the whole vacation just because you made one wrong turn. Silly, right?
Same with falling completely off the wagon if you make one “wrong turn” on your path to health. Just pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and commit to staying on track. You’ll make wrong turns here and there, but as long as you stay committed, you’ll eventually get to your destination.
